My Observation about Facebook (96540313 Joy Chuang)

Recently, Facebook, the popular social networking site, has really created a buzz here in Taiwan. It’s no doubt to say it has become a fashionable topic among college students.

“The world is becoming smaller.” It says that due to our advanced technology, people are getting closer by using the Internet. There have been lots of networking sites which enable people to share and make the world more open and connected; Facebook is also a successful one. Here are some observations about it.

To its advantages, it makes people to communicate with each other worldwide. Having used it for half year, I have met not only my old friends who I didn’t keep in touch for a long time but also made some new ones. Facebook will show some friends who also have same friends with ours; this makes us able to add them into our friends list easily and keep in touch with them. Furthermore, it will always inform your friends what you do; in other words, you will also know what your friends do by being informed. This really makes me feel that we’re always together whenever we go. Moreover, it provides a space for people to upload their videos and photos; some people may use Facebook to check the daily news. The most interesting part might not be those games on Facebook; most of my friends play games. In these games, they compete with each other; they can also know how many grades, scores, and levels of their friends or how much money in the games they own. I think this is the part which attracts college students most; these games have also become part of their entertainment.

To its disadvantage, since it has been on the internet, everything may be in danger. People reveal their birthdates, residences, preferences, dating status, and even phone numbers. These expose us to an unknown world which may bring lots of problems. Everything on it might be unreliable. For example, you will probably be lied by people you don’t’ know because we can’t see, touch or even truly contact in real lives. The other problem will be addiction. This can be seen from the TV news; it reports that workers played games on Facebook during the working time, this caused them got fired! Moreover, as it’s getting popular among college students, it also gains great popularity of secondary schools’ students. Children start to spent time on Facebook, especially on games; it is absolutely not a good phenomena.

All in all, Facebook is a good tool when we make good uses of it; however, it would cause problems when we’re not well aware.
